Cholodenko, director of the lesbian classic High Art and Laurel Canyon, and a regular director of the series Six Feet Under and The L Word, has hit the big time with her Teddy award winning crowd pleaser, starring Annette Bening and Julianne Moore as the lesbian couple with kids.
Bening is glorious in the ‘bread-winner’ role (a tippling control freak), her comedic timing is flawless, with Moore as the ‘wife’ and mother of their two kids. The trouble begins when 18 year old Joni, prompted by her younger brother Laser, contacts their anonymous sperm-donor father without their parents’ knowledge. Surprisingly, he is willing to appropriate the hassle-free perch of “dad” in a ready-made family with the added pleasure of two gorgeous lesbians to impress, and so the trouble continues. Though The Kids are Alright does not reflect an American reality, but rather an American dreaming, it is a landmark film – gone are the days when taking a lesbian role meant the end of a career, and hopefully other screen legends will be emboldened and enticed to fulfil our fantasies.other screen legends will be emboldened and enticed to fulfil our fantasies.
